The following printer test page can be utilized to test the different elements of your printer sub-system.
Metawatch Printer Test Page
The test page is available in a PDF format, you will need Acrobat Reader to read it. To download the FREE software, click here.
Grayscale Chart
The Grayscale bars are an excellent test of the capability of your printer to test the shading capabilities of your printer. They also use a significant amount of Black ink and are an excellent test of your inkjets "refill" status.
Symptoms
You see any horizontal lines within this printout.
Diagnosis
There is a good possibility that you ink cartridge is running low, and or your jets are partially blocked.
Solutions
If putting your printer through a few cleaning cycles doesn't rectify the problem you are probably running out of ink and should change your cartridge.
Color Bars Row 1
The 1st color bar row represents the primary color elements used to produce all color variations. Your inkjet cartridges are composed of these 3 color elements being Cyan (C), Yellow (Y) and Magenta (M) . These colors in conjunction with Black (K) compose the commonly known color combination of CYMK.
Symptoms
If your color printouts appears to be missing a color or have streaking but you are not sure which one just examine this first color row to determine which color is affected.

Color Bars Row 2
The second color bar row represents the primary color elements used to produce colors on your Monitor. These colors designated as Red (R), Green (G) and Blue (B) are the primary colors use in the manufacture of CRT and LCD monitors to display color.
Without going into the technical details, as the fundamental properties of creating color from a monitor differ from that of a printer( One uses emission of colors, and the other uses absorption of color) there needs to be a "Profile" to define how to translate colors between these 2 mediums.
Fortunately, most current operating systems and photo manipulation software come supplied with standard profiles for matching these 2 elements, and are satisfactory for most applications and photo reproduction.
Symptoms
Your color printouts do not match the colors displayed on your monitor.
Diagnosis
You can call up the same color chart on your monitor and compare the colors of the 3 (RGB) colors to determine which color(s) may need adjustment in your color profile.
Solutions
Unfortunately the solutions to this problem are beyond the scope of this document, as the error may within the display system itself, printer subsystem, inks/media, and or a combination of all of the above.
Monitor verification involves the use of a colorimeter to measure the actual colors radiated from your monitor and the base white balance.
Printer verification means to ensure that all inkjets have bee cleaned and are performing satisfactorily.
Ink/media verification is to ensure that your color profiles for Printer, Ink &, Paper are correct for your sub-system.
If you are interested further in the technical aspects of Color Profiling you can read the article published by Adobe How to Ensure Consistant Color from Inkjet Printers.
(Note: You require and need to used Adobe software for this operation)
If you would like to find out more about Color Profiling tools for Monitors, Printers, Scanners, and Cameras go to Color Profiling.
They provide a brief overview of desktop publishing and color management standards as well as ICC profiling.
